Schools Health Education Unit (1983-2012)

Wiltshire Health Related Behaviour Survey

Wiltshire Council worked with the Schools Health Education Unit (SHEU) for almost 30 years to collect data about young people's health related behaviour.

SHEU is an independent organisation that concentrates on school and college surveys, nationally-recognised as the specialist provider of reliable local survey data for schools and colleges.

The Health Related Behaviour Survey takes place every year across the country, the most recent Wiltshire SHEU survey took place in 2011. Since 2014 Wiltshire Council has been working with FAB research to survey Wiltshire pupils.

The original motivation for the SHEU survey work was to provide teachers with an objective picture of the lifestyles of their students, so that they might better plan and provide a curriculum in Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education. Schools that took part in the survey were able to compare anonymous data from their students with the countywide data, as well as wider samples from other areas.

We encourage schools to share current data with their pupils to address areas of concern and challenge some of the misperceptions that young people may hold about the behaviour of their peers.

These surveys produced our most detailed and reliable profile of young people's life at home, at school/college, and with their friends. This information has been used, alongside other data, to identify local health priorities and inform planning of local service delivery.
