School support update from Wiltshire Police

Friday 6th November 2020

The Wiltshire Police Youth and Early Intervention team works with schools, colleagues and partners to share messages and educate young people. The aim is to keep young people in our community safe from harm and exploitation.

Each school has an allocated Community Policing Team Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) as a point of contact. If you are not sure who this is, for confirmation please email youth@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk

As there are new campaigns on safety and crime prevention happening, we would like to update you on how we can support your school.

Full details of this current support and a reminder of ongoing school support sessions can be found in this briefing

Op Sceptre – Monday 9 – Sunday 15 November 2020

Operation Sceptre was launched in July 2015 by The Metropolitan Police Service with the aim of reducing knife crime and the number of families affected across the whole of London, coinciding with new legislation that meant those convicted of carrying a knife for the second time will face a mandatory custodial sentence.

From Monday 9 to Sunday 15 September, we will be joining other forces across the country in raising awareness of Operation Sceptre.

Even with Wiltshire and Swindon showing low levels of knife crime incidents, we still want to continue the preventative approach, through education and youth engagement. Wiltshire Police work with schools, colleges and youth groups regarding weapons awareness and the law.

We have an Exploitation and Vulnerability lesson plan (see resources in the briefing) available for KS3 level, we also have a more targeted weapons awareness session for use within smaller groups, which can be accessed upon request to the Youth and Early Intervention Team.

Recommended additional resources to support classroom deliveries are also listed in the briefing. These provide comprehensive lesson plans to promote discussion, reflection and decision-making, with specialist resources to introduce this topic at primary school level upwards:

Knife Crime Awareness Videos: There are short videos the Youth and Early Intervention Team created alongside students from Wiltshire College, who provided their own insight into what knife crime awareness means to them – the complete set of videos can be viewed above and here.

If you would like to discuss anything raised, please email us on youth@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk for more information on how we can support your PSHE sessions.
