Coombe Bissett Primary School achieved silver status after a number of successful activities including reducing the consumption of fizzy drinks or those with added sugar to zero over a two year period.

Alison Macaulay, Personal, Social and Health Education leader at the school explained: “During one of our school's annual Healthy Food Weeks the teachers planned classroom activities where the children used sugar cubes to represent the added sugar content of different drinks and quickly saw how much hidden sugar there was in some drinks.  Our parents also became very engaged in this initiative and since we have completed the work we have seen a real change in both the children's knowledge of hidden sugars and the drinks the children now have in their lunch boxes.  We are very proud to have been awarded the silver level, which is the reward for all the hard work that has been completed by all the members of our school community.”

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services said: “Our schools have a very important influence on our children’s lives and I applaud these schools which have gone the extra mile to ensure healthy lifestyles are encouraged."

“Congratulations to all the schools which have taken part and have achieved these awards.”

Other schools receiving the award this time include Westbury Junior School where 86 percent of children now walk to school and Manor Fields Primary School where pupils making healthy choices at lunch time are given a golden ticket and celebrated in assembly.
