Wiltshire Healthy Schools celebration event

Thursday 14th January 2016

Yesterday we celebrated the latest cohort of Healthy Schools, including our first gold award achieved by Hardenhuish School.

Seventeen recently accredited schools were invited to attend the ceremony at Hardenhuish School in Chippenham. Those attending received their bronze, silver or gold plaques.

Hardenhuish School in Chippenham achieved their gold award, after improving teaching around mental health and helping the school community to more effectively support those with mental health issues.

Their work on pupils' mental health also attracted the attention of the Department for Education which has recognised the school's good practice in this area using several case studies from the school in their current national guidance document: Mental Health and Behaviour in Schools (DfE, 2014).

Hardenhuish headteacher Jan Hatherell said: "There is nothing more important than supporting young people's health and wellbeing. At Hardenhuish we understand the tremendous mental health pressures on young people today, many of which did not exist 20 years ago. We are delighted that our work in helping our young people to be resilient and successful has been recognised by the Wiltshire Healthy Schools Programme Gold Award, and nationally by the Department for Education."

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children's services presented the awards and said: "Our schools are not only seats of learning but a source of support for pupils and a place where healthy lifestyles can be encouraged. I'd like to congratulate all the schools which have improved their students' health and wellbeing in this way."

A total of 63 schools have achieved Wiltshire Healthy Schools so far at bronze, silver or gold level since it was launched in 2012, replacing the previous National Healthy Schools Award.
