WAY and UKYP elections 2016

Friday 15th January 2016

We hope that Wiltshire schools will assist in promoting this year’s elections of young people aged 11-18 to the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth and UK Youth Parliament.

The election period is 8-22 Feb 2016.

This year, we are trialling election by online ballot; the text voting previously used is expensive and subject to some misuse.

Wiltshire schools have been sent information but any encouragement you can offer would be welcomed.

Issues related to PSHE education and health and wellbeing remain high on the agenda for young people. Many of the candidates are calling for improvements including:

"More support in PSHE. Many children (especially older ones) become curious and increasingly anxious about getting a job and go-ing out into the world. I feel strongly that PSHE lesson should cover this aspect more, as they significantly lack support in these areas."

"Sex education should be improved in schools and be inclusive of all sexualities"

"homophobia that goes on in our communities should stop"

"mental health must be tackled within schools"

"supporting young people with body image problems"

"Mental health services for young people need to be improved, making them more accessible. Young people need more education about mental health; it should be treated with the same dignity as physical health issues."

"Why are so many young people unaware of how to apply for a loan, buy a car, or rent a house. Basic personal finances are essential skills that are all too easily neglected; they need a much greater focus to be put on them so young people know how to live after they leave school."

We hope that secondary school teachers and pupils will join WAY members on 16th March 2016 to discuss how improvements to PSHE can be made by increasing effective consultation with young people.
