Council to launch School Streets trial in five areas of the county

Monday 20th October 2025

Wiltshire Council will be inviting residents to share their views on plans for a new School Streets trial, which helps to create safer and cleaner environments for children

School Streets temporarily restrict motor vehicle access during school drop-off and pick-up times, during the school term. The council will be holding a consultation from Monday 3 November until 23.59 on Sunday 15 December on its trial. People's feedback during the consultation will help to shape the trial before the council starts the project, with it expected to begin after the Easter holidays in 2026.

Each of the trial areas will have the School Streets in place for around 12 months before a decision is made on whether to keep them or remove them.

The trial aims to improve road safety for pupils and their carers travelling to and from schools, and promote healthier, more sustainable travel options around six primary schools across the county.

Research on School Streets in other areas of the country shows that students feel safer and pollution, such as nitrogen oxide emissions, are reduced.

The six schools involved have all requested to take part in the trial project, and the council has been working closely with them to help shape the project in a way that best reflects the unique road layouts of each local area.

The six schools, across five areas, involved in this trial are:

  • Fynamore Primary School, Calne
  • Minster CofE Primary School, Warminster
  • Queen's Crescent Primary School, Chippenham
  • Aloeric Primary School, Melksham
  • Staverton Primary School and Emmaus School, Staverton
